Frank Kriewald

Frank Kriewald passed away peacefully Thursday, May 8, 2025, after a brief illness, surrounded by his devoted wife and loving family and a special friend. He was born in Carrington, North Dakota on Monday, August 23, 1943 to Frank H and Grace Kriewald. In 1947 his family moved to Winger, Minnesota where he spent his formative years on the family farm until 1961. In 1963 Frank enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country from 1963 until 1965 as a dog handler guarding the missile sites in Sylvester, Georgia. He achieved marksmanship distinctions as a sharpshooter, a marksman in pistol and a marksman in carbine, demonstrating exceptional skill and proficiency in firearms training. In 1968 he made his was to Butte, Montana, a place he grew to love deeply. It was in Montana that he met the love of his life, Rochelle Breshears, whom he married in Virginia City on March 17, 1972. Frank worked at Safeway Warehouse, Pepsi Cola and Gilman Construction, all in Butte, MT. He started at Gilman’s as a truck driver working his way to the position of an oil distributor. He was very knowledgeable in running the Bear Cat MFG oil distributor. Frank retired from Gilman Construction in 1999. He went to Alaska in the summers for four years to work for the Emulsion Products, North Pole, Alaska using his talent and knowledge of the Bear Cat distributor. Frank’s greatest love was his wife of 53 years, Rochelle Kriewald. His passion for the outdoors followed closely behind, with elk hunting at the top of the list. He also found joy in fishing, snow machining, riding his motorcycle, driving on of his three tractors, and making the most out of the time he spent with his children. The farm life never left him- as his fondness for the tractors assisted him in all the heavy work that needed to be done. Frank had an adventurous spirit. He lived a life full of dedication, adventure and love that will be cherished by all who knew him. He had some incredible experiences out in the wild. Bagging an elk, moose and bighorn sheep in a single season is no small feat- it takes skill, patience and a lot of preparation. He was a life member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and a charter member of the NRA. Frank also was known for his “world famous” smoked fish. He perfected his recipe and generously shared it with many others. If you knew Frank, you knew he had a sharp wit that kept everyone around him smiling. His humor was infectious, always bringing laughter to those in his presence, and will be sadly missed. Beyond his lighthearted nature, he was a steadfast protector-larger than life and endlessly generous, always ready to lend a helping had to those in need. Frank is survived by his wife, Rochelle Kriewald, daughter and son-in-law, , Theresa (Kriewald) and Mark Hart, daughters, Gayle Larson and Victoria Roberts, ten grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank H. and Grace Kriewald Sr., and his brothers, Richard Kriewald and Dale Kriewald. Franks remains are in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home where friends may call beginning Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 o’clock with Pastor Sarah Schilcher officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Mountain View Cemetery and a reception will follow at the Star Lane Event Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
