Lois J. Richards

Lois J. Richards passed away Friday morning in a local hospital. She was born in Butte March 3, 1926 to Percy John and Ruth Lucille (Barnicoat) Peters. Lois attended the Blaine School, Butte High School and Butte Business College. She was employed by The Montana Standard where she met her love, Garfield Richards. On September 15, 1946 she and Gar were united in marriage in Trinity Methodist Church, where Lois was a life-long member. She served the Trinity /Mountain View Methodist Church in many capacities and was also a member of the Silver Leaf Rebekah’s, the Cornish Cousins, Mountain View Social Development Center, the H U Club and we couldn’t forget the Woolworth’s Bunch. She worked as the “Candy Lady” at Woolworth’s both uptown and in the mall for over 20 years. Lois had many joys in her life. She and Gar loved to travel especially with family. They made many trips to Alaska enjoying all the adventures they could. There were trips down the ALCAN to Kansas City, Florida, California, Salt Lake City in addition to the many trips to Idaho and Spokane. When a trip was talked about, they were the first ones with suitcases packed! Lois loved her flowers and her home. She and Gar could not wait for spring to come and start planning their gardens. Flowers were always enjoyed no matter what flower or time of year. During Christmas, Lois could be found cruising the Christmas decorations to see what was new. They loved their rides through Butte or where ever they were spending Christmas looking at the decorations. Family and friends loved going to Lois’ house as she was always a hostess making sure everyone had something to eat and drink. Although family has tried, they have not matched her pasties or red velvet cake. She was truly a great hostess to all. Watching the 4th of July fireworks from their front porch was always a good time. Sitting on the deck or front porch enjoying the view was a favorite past time. Lois was extremely proud of her large family. She loved celebrating with the little ones, and there are lots of little ones giving a reason to celebrate! Lois is survived by her three children and their spouses: John “Jay” and Joyce Richards of Butte, Ruth King of Anchorage Alaska and Carole and Dan King of Salem Oregon, her seven grandchildren and their spouses: John and Melanie Richards, Kathy and Rick Phillips, Rena Hillman, Todd and Tina King, Dawn and Malcolm Dunbar, Paul King, Megan and Andrew Karkiewicz, her 19 great-grandchildren: Cody Richards and Jaylynn St.Pierre, Samantha Jo Richards, Ashley and Trevor Cardin, Brandi and Junior Shorter, Tausha Day, Tiffany and Jeremy Buzzard, Nakita Day, Tessa Hillman, Christopher Hillman, Bailey Hillman, David King, Deshante’ Fields, Tre’ Shawn King-Dunbar, Malcolm Dunbar, Sabrina Jones-Dunbar, Hanah Stallings, Kevin Opel and Christopher Opel, Zev Hunter and her 18 great-great-grandchildren: Zach Cardin, Eric Cardin, Kadence Day, Karsen Day, Keeliana Shorter, Seth Day, Colt Day, Dakota Buzzard, Paytton Day, Chevy Buzzard, Landon Day, Lucas Day, Brentlee Richards, Brystol Richards, Maliyah Sophasath, Kaydence Whalen, Michael Stallings and Rory Opel. Besides her parent and parents-in-law, Lois is preceded in death by her husband Garfield who passed away June 14, 2007, Casey Jones (beloved Cocker) October 2014 and sister, Emily “Luella” Peters. In so much as Lois looked forward to the mail each day with great anticipation, her family asks that friends and family write a note, card or letter specifically for Lois that will be place in her casket with her.
