Shawn Olaf Soyland

Shawn Olaf Soyland was born on July 5, 1971, in Butte, Montana to Joanne and Johannes Soyland. His arrival gave his big brother, Jeff, a best friend. He attended Hillcrest Elementary, East Middle School, and graduated from Butte High School in 1990. During high school, he excelled in football and track, earning a starting position as a defensive end as a junior and was recognized as the top defensive player of the year (the Head Hunter Award) as a senior. Following graduation, he played in the East/West Shrine game. Although he loved football, his passion was track. He was an accomplished triple jumper, qualifying for the state championship. As a member of the Silver B’s, he looked forward to their annual dinner. He attended Montana Tech and Western Montana College before finding his love and passion for bricklaying. Shawn was a foreman with Anderson Masonry at the time of his death. His work is showcased in Butte, all over Montana, many western states, as well as the Caribbean. Shawn met Mary Loewen in high school and in 1991, their daughter Malia Hope was born giving them their greatest joy. Shawn and Mary remained good friends, becoming great co-parents and ensuring the best for their daughter. He loved traveling and camping with Malia. Shawn was a wonderful Dad, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and a great friend to many. He enjoyed fishing, skiing, and hiking, but one of his favorite past times was riding motorcycles with Layne Pentecost. He will be deeply missed by anyone that had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his precious granddaughter, Delaney Katherine, daughter, Malia Soyland, mother, Joanne Wright, father, Johannes Soyland, brothers Gordie Hall, Tadzio Soyland, Jeff (Natalie) Soyland, Craig (Liane) Wright, and Walt (Elizabeth Maki) Wright and sisters, Tania (Travis) Bailey and Lori Soyland, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was greeted in Heaven by his dad, Jeffrey Wright, grandson, Ryan Olaf, and his grandparents. Funeral services will be Friday October 11, 2024 at 11:00 am at Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home, 1800 Florence Ave Butte MT. Reception following the services at McQueen Athletic Club, 3250 Hecla St Butte MT.
