Thomas Joseph "Lunk" Lowney

Tom “Lunk” Lowney passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Saturday, January 4, 2025 in Butte. He was born in Butte on Thursday, December 6, 1934 to John H. and Margaret (Rock) Lowney. Tom attended St. Joseph Grade School and graduated in 1948. He then attended Boys Central, graduating in 1952. After graduation he joined the United States Marine Corp and proudly served his country in the post-war occupation of Japan and was discharged in 1955. Tom returned home to Butte and worked as a laborer and hod carrier for Jolley Construction, LeProwse Construction and Leaky Bucket Construction where he made many lifelong friends. Tom was incredibly proud of his 44 years of sobriety and assisted others in reaching that goal. The love of Tom’s life was Gayle Pasley and they spent decades together prior to her passing in October 2023. Frank Grady and Tom were lifelong friends who supported one another through good times and bad. Frank’s daughter Colleen was also a dear friend. Later in life he spent hours on the golf course with his buddies and always enjoyed lunches with his classmates. He also had a great passion for reading, poetry and history. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and her husband, Margie and Ross Richardson, his brothers, Billy and Jim and his brother and his wife, Jack and Betty. Survivors include niece, nephews and their spouses and children: Colleen and Wayne Harper (Tawni and Bailey), Ross and Sheila Richardson (Meghan, Ross, Ryan, Mandi and Mariah), jack Richardson and Connie Hepola (Keiffer and Kennady) and John and Lisa Lowney (Daniel, Sara and Caili); sister-in-law, Carmen Lowney and her family of Texas; great-great nieces and nephews: Frankie, Rylie, Rykker, Grace, Sarah, Ross, Grier, Mazzi, Rhett, Wynne, Taye, Mattox, Mack, Rial, Ridge, Andrew, Addison, Mya, Leah, Sam and Max. He dearly loved his family and enjoyed many happy times with them. Cremation has taken place. His family will receive friend Friday, January 10th beginning at 9 o’clock in St. Patrick Catholic Church where funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 o’clock. Interment of ashes and military honors will take place Tuesday morning, January 14th at 11 o’clock in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family would like to thank Honeybee Hospice for their compassionate care of Tom. Memorials may be made to the Butte Athletic Council, 1303 Caledonia Street or to a charity of the donor’s choice. “It’s not dying that I mind…it’s the leaving Butte!”
