Velora "Val" Hulverson

Velora “Val” Hulverson passed away peacefully at her home on Friday evening, April 10, 2020. She was 97. Val was born in Butte on August 2, 1922. Her parents were Charles Parrett and Mary Frances Moran. She lived her entire life in the Mining City, and had been a resident of Big Sky Senior Living for the past 19 years. Val attended local schools and worked locally, including JC Penney, The House of Fabrics, Eddy’s Bakery, and various restaurants. She enjoyed gardening, hated birds, loved arts & crafts, hated chokecherries, loved her dogs, sewed all things torn, and was a fabulous cook. Val’s kind and caring nature never drifted far from a sharp wit and sense of humor- attributes that earned her many lifelong friends over the years. Val was first married to Arthur Benton of Butte. Art was well known and successful in the construction industry, and he traveled the world in that career. They had two children, Sharon and Gary. But, as often happens in life and to good people, their pathway parted, and Val and Art went their separate ways. In 1951, Val married Allen Hulverson of Butte. Al was a perfect match for her; a handsome and rugged railroad man who made her heart soar, and who would be Val’s husband for the next 40 years. Al was a big man with a perfect blend of heart, humor, and commanding presence. They had two children, Jeanine and Mike. Their family home was on B Street, where, in the midst of wonderful and like-minded neighbors, they devoted their lives to raising a blended family of four kids. You could drive down B Street almost any summer evening and see them all sitting out on the covered front porch, enjoying the warmth of family and the fading light of another good day. The kids could not have had a better home or better parents. Val was extremely proud of her family, which grew to be quite a long list over the years. That list includes her children & spouses Sharon (Benton) Carson of Spokane, Washington, Gary & Marlene (Bugni) Benton of Lacey, Washington, Jeanine (Hulverson) & Bob Fivey of Butte, and Mike & Dee Dee (Clark) Hulverson of Casa Grande, Arizona. Grandchildren & spouses are Tony & Merri (Campbell) Nielsen, Traci (Nielsen-deceased) & Steve Cromwell, Shawn Nielsen & Heidi Wadsley, Kristi (Benton) & Jon Strup, Jodi (Benton) & Josh Helton, Brian & Breanne (Riggs) Benton, Nikole (Fivey) & Brodie Kelly, Bobby & Kelli (Johnson) Fivey, Jason & Tanya (Bryan) Hulverson, and Josh & Danielle (Harthorn) Hulverson. There are also 25 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren on that list, and Gramma Val will most certainly arrange to have lightning bolts strike those responsible for not listing each and every one of them by name. Therefore, may she remember that the oldest sibling is always in charge. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Big Sky Senior Living, Val’s doctors, and various care specialists, for the compassionate support that they provided over the course of so many years. She left this world a better place, enriched our lives, and will be greatly missed.
